What do Systems of Equations have to do with the Vision for Learning?

Lovett’s Vision for Learning--which speaks to our commitment to develop students’ critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication skills--comes to life in myriad small ways in every day, in every class.

This week, seventh and eighth graders in Advanced Algebra I worked in collaborative groups to research different methods for solving systems of equations and inequalities.  Each group created a visual presentation to teach their specific strategy to their classmates, who listened, took notes, asked questions, and practiced the strategy with the support of the presenting group members.

Each presentation began with a real-world word problem for which the strategy was appropriate. Once all of the groups had presented, students discussed the type of problems for which each method is most appropriate, further cementing the strategies in their minds.

While focused deeply on specific math content, students explored authentic applications (critical thinking), practiced their public speaking skills (communication), worked in diverse teams to create presentations (collaboration), and considered different teaching strategies and approaches to help their classmates master the information (creativity).
