Frequently Asked Questions

The Lovett Conservatory of Music provides age appropriate private lessons in piano, band and orchestra instruments, guitar, and voice. We offer quality instruction from highly-qualified faculty in order to enhance our students’ lives through the exploration of and education in music.

How do I know what day/time I’m signing up for?
Each of our instructors maintains their own teaching schedule. Once you have registered online, you will be contacted by a faculty member prior to August 24, to schedule your lesson day and time. If you have not been contacted by August 24, please notify Natalie Pitchford, Program Director of the Lovett Conservatory of Music.

What if I am unable to get a lesson time that works for my child’s schedule?
We do all that we can to find a lesson day and time that works for both the instructor and the student. In the rare case that a mutual time is not available, a full refund will be issued.

Does my child have to commit to lessons for the full school year?
Yes, but there are two payment options – you can pay for the entire year up front, or you can pay for just the fall semester, and the second payment will be charged to your credit card in early January. Like many new skills and disciplines, it often takes a year to see all of the positive results that come from taking lessons and urge all families to encourage their children to “stick with it” for at least a year.

How do I request a specific teacher?
New Conservatory students may email Natalie Pitchford (natalie.pitchford@lovett.org) to request a specific instructor, and we will do our best to honor all requests.

Should I register for a 30, 45 or 60-minute lesson?
We recommend that all students new to the Lovett Conservatory of Music register for a 30- minute lesson unless prior approval has been received from their instructor.

My child is in the Lower School and has a lesson right after school ends. How will they get to their lesson?
Parents may register to have their LCM teacher escort their child for an additional fee of $195 per semester. No partial or full refunds for the escort fee will be issued in the event a parent or other approved person escorts the student to and/or from their lesson on any given date. Students who are Grade 5 and younger must be escorted to and from their lessons by a parent, guardian, approved older sibling or relative. However, if lessons times are missed as a result of tardiness by the student or the aforementioned approved escorts, the lesson will be deemed unexcused.

Are there Applied Lessons recitals? Is student participation mandatory?
Yes, there are recitals that will be held in the fall and the spring (exact dates can be found on the online Lovett master calendar). The Program Director will arrange for recital sign-ups in early spring. Performing is an essential component of music education; therefore participation in recitals is required for all students enrolled in lessons at the conservatory. The conservatory instructors will contact parents later in the school year to schedule their child’s recital date.

I’m having trouble completing the online registration process. What should I do?
Please contact Natalie Pitchford, natalie.pitchford@lovett.org.

Where can I find an instrument and/or materials for my child’s lesson?
Contact your conservatory instructor directly for guidance. If your child is enrolled in Orchestra or Band, you will receive information on how to obtain an instrument.

What happens if we go out of town or my child gets sick on a lesson day? Will the lesson be made up?
Students will be given 12 lessons per semester, and are permitted 2 excused absences per semester due to unexpected illness or prior approval by instructor. If illness, a parent must notify the LCM instructor the evening before an absence or by 7 AM the day of the lesson. If the child goes home in the middle of the day due to illness, it is an excused absence if the LCM instructor is notified via phone or email at the earliest possible time on the day of the absence. If a student has a standing medical or dental appointment, the LCM instructor must be notified two weeks in advance of the appointment. Required school activities are also excused if a parent notifies the LCM instructor at least a week in advance of the required school activity. Lessons for excused absences will be made up at the end of each semester during a two-week period offered by the LCM instructor or as directed by the LCM instructor. Many of our instructors teach in their home studios and at other schools aside from Lovett, in addition to performing as professional musicians, so their time is limited. It is important for parents to communicate in a timely manner regarding any change in their child’s scheduled lesson time. Skyping lessons is permitted for make-up lessons or otherwise, and may be scheduled with your instructor.
