Summer School FAQs

List of 6 frequently asked questions.

  • What is the dress policy?

The dress for summer school is casual. Shorts and sandals are acceptable, but bare feet are not.
  • What is the attendance policy?

In case of illness, please call Mr. Mallet, summer school director, by 8:30 am at (404) 262-3032, ext. 1467. The student must bring a signed note from his/her parent the day following the absence.

Make-up work is the student’s responsibility. The student should consult class syllabi, classmates, or the teacher for assignments. If the absence occurs on the day of a scheduled test or quiz or the due date of a written assignment, the student completes that work on the day of return. If the absence occurs the day before the test, the student must take any assessment as scheduled. Once a student has arrived on campus, he/she may not leave campus until dismissed by the teacher.

If there is an emergency situation, parents must contact the summer school director. If a student has more than five late arrivals (after 8:10 am), he/she is in jeopardy of not receiving credit for the course. Doctor’s appointments must be scheduled after school hours.

Because summer school is very concentrated, an absence of one day is the equivalent of missing over a week of the regular school year. Therefore, having more than one absence will result in the withholding of credit for a course.

NOTE: Due to the full day schedule and the experiential nature of the Urban Experience course, an absence of more than four hours (half day) during Urban Experience will result in the withholding of the credit for the course.

Once a student has arrived on campus, he/she may not leave campus until dismissed by the teacher.
  • Are summer school classes open to non-Lovett students?

Classes are open to students from outside of The Lovett School.
  • Are there special rules for Field Trips?

Students must turn in permission forms, signed by their parents, for selected field trips.
  • What is the Summer School withdrawal policy?

A student may withdraw from an academic summer school course during the first three days of the course with no transcript notation. In the event of a student-initiated course withdrawal on the 4th or 5th day of the class, the transcript will indicate one of the following, depending on the student’s grade at the time of the withdrawal: WP (Withdrawn-Passing) or WF (Withdrawn-Failing). No student-initiated withdrawals are permitted after the first week of class.

In accordance with our refund policy, no refund is made when a student withdraws less than two weeks before the start of a summer program. In case of withdrawal due to illness, the family and the summer program will share the loss equally. Written notice from a physician may be required before the refund is issued.Any deviation to this policy will be at the discretion of the Summer School Director and the Assistant Headmaster.
  • What is summer school / study skills course refund policy?

The Lovett School reserves the right to cancel any portion of a Summer Program in case of unforeseen circumstances. Refunds will be issued. In the event a child withdraws two weeks prior to the program start date, a tuition refund will be made, minus a $50 non-refundable processing fee. If a child withdraws fewer than two weeks prior to the start date, no refund will be made. In case of withdrawal due to illness, the family and the summer program will share the loss equally. Written notice from a physician may be required before the refund is issued.

Summer Speed Ahead Program

The Academic Resource Center offers Grades K-12 students the opportunity to reinforce skills or acquire new skills over the summer through Speed Ahead. Students are contracted for a minimum of eight one-on-one sessions. All Speed Ahead tutors are either Lovett teachers or ARC tutors; therefore, they have a thorough understanding of Lovett’s curriculum and academic expectations. Please contact Rebecca McGhee with any questions.
