Welcome to the Lovett Upper School

Dan Alig, Upper School Principal

Lovett’s Upper School program aims to develop the whole child by cultivating the skills articulated in the school’s vision for learning: creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication.
The Upper School curriculum instills core values surrounding honesty, respect, courage, compassion, and integrity, and develops global citizens committed to servant leadership and sustainability. The school achieves these aims through a vibrant and challenging college-preparatory curriculum that includes 29 honors and 22 Advanced Placement (AP) courses, elective options such as honors astronomy and marine biology, and interdisciplinary classes such as History of Global Nonviolence, The Holocaust and the History of Genocide, and African Studies.

Students complement their curriculum with robust offerings in athletics, arts, service, and clubs. 79% of Upper School students participate in interscholastic athletics, and 82% of Upper School students take advantage of Lovett’s fine arts offerings.

Experiential learning opportunities are another key aspect of the Upper School experience. In ninth grade, Service Initiation for Ninth Graders (SING) provides an opportunity for students foster a stronger sense of community with their Lovett peers and within the city of Atlanta. Through River Awareness for Tenth Graders (RAFT), sophomores experience and appreciate the Chattahoochee River by spending a day rafting and cleaning the riverbanks. And juniors embark on Junior Outdoor Expedition (JOE), five days and four nights in the Pisgah National Forest.

Throughout, Lovett faculty are committed to supporting student growth through meaningful, personal interactions that foster the intellectual skills and personal qualities necessary to thrive in a complex and dynamic world.
