Telling Stories Through Code
Posted 12/16/2016 07:25AM
Third graders explored reading, writing, coding, and animation—all at the same time! Students read a Georgia Book Award nominated book, The Bear Ate Your Sandwich by Julia Sarcone-Roach. Then, students took on the role of author as they wrote their own unique endings to the story. Each story was carefully designed to include an element of falling action and a resolution. Students storyboarded their ideas and then began to envision the types of movements their characters would need in order to animate them. Using an app called Scratch Jr., students thoughtfully programmed their characters and scenes to bring the stories to life. Students used block coding and drew upon their understanding of sequencing, loops, control, motion, looks, and sound blocks in order to tell their story.
