Lower School Visits with Author Peter Brown

On Friday, September 2, the Dorothy Floyd Library hosted a visit from author and Caldecott Honor winning illustrator Peter Brown. Brown has written and illustrated many popular books for children, including Mr. Tiger Goes Wild, The Wild Robot, and Creepy Carrots! The latest installment of the Creepy Tales series, titled Creepy Crayon!, was the main focus of Brown’s visit. After an introductory skit by fifth graders Brown detailed his journey to becoming an author and illustrator, and showed the audience some of his first drawings from when he was a small child. He shared Creepy Crayon! aloud and showed the process of designing the cover of the book. Finally, he demonstrated a live drawing of the main character of the Creepy Tales series, Jasper Rabbit. Fourth graders Vin and Christian hosted a Q&A session with questions that Lower School students had asked during library class the week before the visit. Students and teachers alike were enthralled with the process of illustrating a picture book, and Brown inspired many students to practice their drawing skills.

The Lovett School is an independent, coeducational day school where children from Kindergarten through Grade 12 find the courage to explore and the drive to discover.
