Cooking as a Community with the LIA

Last Sunday the Lovett International Alliance (LIA) held their annual Kickoff Event to welcome families to the new school year.  This year the event took a new spin by hosting a virtual Live Cooking Class with classically trained chef, Chef Cat Turner.  Chef Cat hails from three generations of cooks and has over 15 years of experience in the food and beverage industry.  She demonstrates a respect for food and teaches about the importance of fresh ingredients.

With Chef Cat’s belief that nothing brings cultures together like the universal language of food, she taught our “Lion Pride” how to make some classic Hispanic/Latinx dishes.  Lovett's parents, students and faculty cooked along in their kitchens as Chef Cat shared her recipes for ceviche, sofrito and paella via Zoom. She developed these recipes to be family friendly, easy to make and adaptable to various diets.  Chef Cat interacted with all the families by sharing tips and tricks and answering everyone's questions.  Lovett’s Margarita Pina, Director of Hispanic Student Outreach and Support was on hand to add interesting information about the origin of the dishes.

Cooking these Hispanic-Latinx dishes as a community was a wonderful way to  lead into Hispanic Heritage Month.  Stay tuned for more upcoming LIA and Hispanic/Latinx Month Events
