The Portman Family Middle School
Lovett's Portman Family Middle School was designed to reflect Lovett's commitment to environmental sustainability.
By building "green," Lovett will save tens of thousands of dollars a year in utility costs, while providing our students with a healthy learning environment.
Lovett was awarded LEED Gold certification for the Middle School from the U.S. Green Building Council. "Lovett's LEED Gold certification demonstrates tremendous leadership," said Rick Fedrizzi, president and CEO of the U.S. Green Building Council. "Lovett's Portman Family Middle School efficiently uses our natural resources and makes an immediate, positive impact on our planet, which will benefit future generations." The school has also earned the ENERGY STAR from the U.S. Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Agency.
Sustainable features of the new Portman Family Middle School include:
Construction on the 75,000-square-foot Middle School began following a $10 million unrestricted gift--the largest in Lovett's history--from Jan and John Portman, parents of Lovett alumni and grandparents of current students. The building has since been named in their family's honor.
- Building energy monitoring system;
- Use of rapidly renewable materials (e.g., bamboo flooring, linoleum, cedar ceilings, PaperStone, etc.);
- Electric elevator in lieu of hydraulic elevator;
- Indoor air quality management program;
- Office and student furniture that are a combination of GreenGuard and Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) certified, and contain fabric made of recycled content;
- ENERGY STAR appliances;
- Reliance on laptop computers, which reduces paper usage and costs;
- Energy-saving classroom lighting systems;
- Energy-saving windows (windows reflect heat in the summer and retain warmth in the winter, which saves on cooling/heating costs);
- Solar hot water system;
- Low water use plumbing fixtures;
- Green Roof (outdoor classroom and demonstration garden for water harvesting);
- Water collection and recycling system (cistern, condensate piping, irrigation pump,etc.); and
- Composting and recycling of materials that students use during the day.
