An independent, coed K-12 day school in Atlanta

Music

In music, students work as an ensemble. Students learn to listen and communicate through their music. They learn the context of a piece of music and draw all these pieces together to perform a variety of music from different periods of history and cultures.

Band

The band program offers the study of instrumental music to students in fourth through 12th grades. Our curriculum develops students’ technical ability on their instruments while promoting advanced musical aptitude and individual artistic expression in a variety of musical styles. By the end of their tenure, band members have a high-level of proficiency as instrumentalists and have performed on campus and at national competitions.

The Upper School features the Wind Ensemble and our award-winning Honors Ellington Jazz Ensemble. The Wind Ensemble performs traditional and contemporary wind band music and travels yearly to regional and national festivals. The Ellington Jazz Ensemble celebrates the music of Duke Ellington as well as classic and modern jazz ensemble literature. The jazz ensemble performs around metro Atlanta and travels throughout the country to compete at national festivals.

Chorus

The choral program has a rich and distinguished history, dating to the founding of the institution itself. The School’s philosophy of utilizing a comprehensive curriculum that seeks to develop the whole child—intellectually, physically, spiritually, socially, aesthetically, and emotionally—is exemplified through emphasis on the visual and performing arts. Lovett choral ensembles are represented annually in the Spivey Hall Honor Choirs and the GMEA All-State Choruses.

The purpose of the choral program is to seek excellence in every aspect of programming, rehearsals, performances, and conduct. As a musical community, we strive to become our very best as viable individuals and collective performing artists. Our goal, as students and teachers, is to be tolerant, to be open, kind, and forgiving so that we are able to create a community where all feel valued and are accepted.

Orchestra

Orchestra classes emphasize technical development and instrumental facility, musical awareness, music history, and music theory.

Musical excellence is achieved through student-centered instruction on the physical and intellectual skills required to perform string and full orchestra music from a wide range of musical styles and genres. Students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities like private lessons, GMEA All-State Orchestra, GISA All-Select Orchestra, and any of the many fine youth orchestras in the area.

The Lovett Collegium Strings is an honors-level ensemble that draws its members from the Chamber Orchestra. This ensemble focuses on compositions intended for performance by small string ensembles. Students in the Collegium Strings engage in scholarly preparation of music through theoretical analysis, historical context, and historically appropriate performance practice to create authentic performances.

Lovett Conservatory of Music
