Learning at Lovett

Global Online Academy
Global Online Academy allows us to expand our curricular offerings while giving our students critical opportunities to learn in a global classroom, from first-rate teachers, through an online platform. As our students move ahead to college and careers, they will increasingly be expected to communicate and collaborate with colleagues around the world.
In 2013, Lovett entered into a partnership with Global Online Academy (GOA). GOA is a nonprofit organization that reimagines learning to empower students and educators to thrive in a globally networked society. GOA offers Lovett students the opportunity to learn alongside peers from around the world.

There are currently more than 75 select independent schools in the consortium, from Accra, Ghana and Sintra, Portugal to Las Vegas, Nevada and Bronx, New York. All GOA courses are taught by teachers who are currently teaching at a GOA member school.

Students take GOA courses for credit at Lovett. GOA course workload and course intensity is equivalent to courses taken on campus. Unlike many online courses, students are not passive receptors of pre-loaded lectures from teachers. Instead, students collaborate on challenging and interesting projects with students from around the world.

How Does GOA Work at Lovett?

  • Lovett has room for 20 10th-12th graders to take GOA coursework each semester. Lovett covers the cost of the course, though families may be responsible for the cost in certain drop/add situations.

  • The GOA course takes one of the seven class periods in a student's schedule, although there is no location to which students must report. The period acts like an independent study, allowing students to work on GOA or other work during that time.

  • Students should expect five to seven hours of work per week for a GOA class, equivalent to the class and homework time of a Lovett class.

  • Final GOA grades appear on student transcripts and count in the Lovett grade point average (GPA). During the semester, students' interim grades are kept in GOA's learning management system and are not reported on Lovett's quarterly report cards.
The Lovett School is an independent, coeducational day school where children from Kindergarten through Grade 12 find the courage to explore and the drive to discover.
