Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Board Committee

The commitment to address any organizational gaps in mission fulfillment was reaffirmed during the strategic planning exercises of the Lovett Board of Trustees in the winter of 2020. While that work has been running in the background of governance and senior leadership, the national events of this past spring, highlighted the emotional and programmatic urgency of ensuring that Lovett has the right structures in place to deliver immediately upon our mission.

Throughout 2020, the Board of Trustees and DEI Committee have heard from hundreds of students, parents, alumni, and faculty/staff who have shared their experiences, stories, and insights as members of the Lovett community. Where Lovett has fallen short of creating an educational and social experience that is just and equitable for any community member, we must be and are profoundly sorry to have failed in this promise. That is a past failure and will not be our future reality. We are devoted to addressing our own challenges regarding equity and inclusion, innovative 21st century curriculum and programming, and community building that affirms, nurtures, and sustains all Lions, across the diversity of backgrounds that are here and will continue to come.

The Lovett Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee has been tasked to lay the foundation of developing a strategic approach to integrating DEI skills and practices into the school’s organizational systems and policies, enhancing the educational outcomes and experiences for every Lovett student and family. This is a standing committee of the Board of Trustees and will continue exercising strategic leadership to ensure that our DEI practices will help draw all members in our community even more closely together.

In August, the Committee submitted a report to Head of School, Meredyth Cole outlining institutional objectives and expectations. The committee’s work addresses four key areas of focus: Student Experience, Family and Employee Experience, Institutional Policy and Practice, and Pedagogy. We invite you to review the Committee’s report and approved recommendations and look forward to sharing our ongoing progress with you through all Lovett media channels. We are humbled by the tremendous support of those in our community who love Lovett and are committed to serving as partners in this important work.
