Ryan Ohde and Caroline Peak learned first-hand what it takes to work in sports this past Thursday at the rivalry Pace Academy soccer games.
These two students are a part of Adekale Ande’s independent study class, which is a way to learn multimedia skills in photography, videography, and graphic design in the realm of athletic communications. Ohde and Peak were assigned a to come up with a promotional event for an athletic contest. The goal being to plan the event, market the event and then execute it.
“I wanted them to get practical experience working a sporting event from multiple facets.” Ande said. “I think they did a phenomenal job and heard great feedback from faculty and parents.”
Ohde and Peak quickly decided on a Teacher’s Appreciation Night. An event that allowed them to promote their friends on the soccer team and get more eyes on the team, while highlighting teachers who have made an impact on the athletes. Ohde quickly set up a google form asking the seniors on both boys and girls soccer teams who were their favorite teachers and why. From these results, Peak made a script for the event for the PA announcer and captured action shots and portraits of the teachers at halftime. He also made a graphic to promote the event on social media.
“I think the overall event went well and several students who were fans at the event wanted to do something like this at their respective sports,” Peak said. “If we do it again, we have to just communicate it out a little further in advance to get the most turnout.”
Twelve teachers were nominated by 15 seniors and were honored at the halftime of the Pace Academy soccer doubleheader.
“I thought it was fun getting to see the different teachers and the impacts they had on students, “Ohde said. “There was a wide variety of subjects and different teachers.”
