Lower School Students Become Float Engineers for the First Balloons Over Lovett Thanksgiving Parade

The engineering and creativity skills of the Lower School students were put to the test by working as a team to build parade floats. On Friday, Nov. 22, Lower School students in kindergarten and second grade paraded their unique floats outside the school in the first Balloons over Lovett Thanksgiving Parade.

“From a class perspective, this was a great crossover between inGen, Library, and all of the homerooms for the grade involved,” says Vanessa Boone, inGen Studio Teacher, and Perry Yates, Lower School Librarian. “From a greater school perspective, we had many, many amazing parent volunteers, teacher volunteers from the Lower School Resource team, older students playing in a drumline for the parade, and an audience of our Lower School peers watching and cheering us on!”

Leading up to the event, the students listened to the story “Balloons Over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy's Parade” and learned about the life of the puppeteer, Tony Sarg. In engineering class, students designed their balloon float prototypes as a team to create their balloon characters in a balloon-making workshop. 

Teachers and staff look forward to this beautiful parade becoming an annual tradition for the Lower School.
