Edwards Diaz Named New Varsity Girls Basketball Coach

Atlanta, Ga— Taja Edwards Diaz named new Lovett Girls’ Varsity basketball head coach.

Taja joins the Lovett Lions family for the 2024-2025 school year after most recently, serving as a Pro-Scout for the Indiana Fever and an Assistant Coach for the Phoenix Mercury, where she coordinated player development and game strategy. Prior to her time with the Indiana Fever and Phoenix Mercury, her coaching experience includes key positions at Texas Christian University, Loyola Marymount, Dartmouth College, USC, Cal State Fullerton, and Ole Miss. At USC, Loyola Marymount and Dartmouth she held dual coaching and recruiting responsibilities, giving her the experience in collegiate athletics that will serve Lovett’s student athletes well. 

Roney Eford touched on what Coach Edwards Diaz brings to the Lovett School.

“Taja’s expertise and student-centered approach to athletics will benefit our student athletes greatly,” Eford said,” During the selection process, Taja impressed everyone with her comprehensive approach and in-depth plans for our girls basketball program. Her dedication, leadership and passion for the sport of basketball was very evident. We are excited to collaborate with her when she arrives on campus.”

Previously Coach Edwards Diaz played collegiately at Fresno State where she helped the Bulldogs win four consecutive WAC championships and made four trips to the NCAA tournament. She brings extensive coaching experience from collegiate and professional basketball, including roles in the Ivy League, Power 5 conferences, NBA, and WNBA.

Coach Edwards Diaz is eager to start working with our student-athletes committed to fostering a positive team culture focused on growth and excellence.

“I am thrilled to become the Head Girls Basketball Coach at The Lovett School,” Edward Diaz said, “I was drawn to Lovett because of its exceptional academic standards and commitment to excellence both in the classroom and on the court. As a coach and educator, I am passionate about empowering student-athletes to reach their full potential. My vision for the program is to equip players with the skills, confidence, and character to succeed at the next level, whether that's in collegiate athletics or beyond.”

In addition to her basketball responsibilities, Coach Edwards Diaz will be leveraging her teaching skills as a lower school co-teacher.
