Author James Ponti Visits The Lovett School

The Lovett School welcomed James Ponti, bestselling author of the City Spies series, for a special visit with students in grades 3 through 5 on Wednesday, Sept. 3. During his time on campus, Ponti introduced his latest series, The Sherlock Society, signed more than 200 books for students, and shared insights into his passion for writing and storytelling.

Ponti explained that his inspiration for The Sherlock Society stemmed from a lifelong love of mystery stories.

“I love mystery stories because I think they're the most interactive. With a mystery, every reader gets to play along and be a detective and that is so much fun,” he said. Drawing from his own childhood in a Florida beach town, he chose to set the series in Miami, a location he felt offered greater opportunities for compelling and dynamic storylines.

Ponti emphasized the importance of connecting with young readers and encouraging them to see themselves not only as participants in a story but also as creators.

“Most writers hope that readers find and recognize themselves in the pages of our books, but I also want them to be able to see themselves as the creator of a book or a song or any type of creative thing,” he explained.

Ponti’s visit offered students a unique opportunity to engage with a celebrated author while deepening their appreciation for reading and creativity. He hopes his visit inspired students to embrace their curiosity and imagination both on the page and beyond it.
