A Letter from the Headmaster

Spiritual Life

The 2011-12 school year marks Lovett's 86th year! The faculty and I feel so blessed to teach in a school with Lovett's distinctive spirit--a spirit inspired daily by the philosophy and genius of our founder, Mrs. Eva Edwards Lovett, a true visionary and educational pioneer.

Our philosophy calls those of us at Lovett today to remember that education is about both the individual and the community. We seek to nurture the curiosity and creativity and love of learning of each of our students and at the same time, we work to build a community whose members are committed to the timeless and sustaining principles of integrity, mutual responsibility, empathy, and compassion. In other words, this kind of education calls us to live lives of purpose, meaning, service, and to take on the very real challenges facing our world, and to commit ourselves to the common good of our communities.

In my eight years as Lovett's headmaster, I have seen countless examples of our students' demonstrating actively their concern for one another, their care for the school community they share, and their commitment to making our world a better place. Their intellectual vigor, their collaborative and problem-solving skills, their dedication to service--these qualities and so many others--daily inspire my colleagues and me."

Lovett is committed simultaneously to the "whole child" and the "whole community." This inspiring mission, combined with bright and engaging students, talented and dedicated faculty and staff, and caring and supportive parents are powerful forces that in turn create a brand of schooling that challenges us, nurtures us, and lifts us.

Our new LEED Gold-certified Portman Family Middle School, which opened in the fall of 2009, along with significant improvements to our athletic facilities, a renovated dining hall, and a new music recording studio, reinforce this dedication to the whole child and strengthen our campus-wide devotion to environmental sustainability.

We hope you will enjoy learning more about our community, our teachers, our students, and our spirit.

Sincerely,

William S. Peebles IV
