Go back to school with the 2012 Evening Education Series at Lovett! Beginning Monday, March 12, classes meet one night per week for three consecutive weeks on Lovett’s campus. Net proceeds of Evening Education benefit need-based financial aid for Lovett students.
Atlanta and America’s Civil War (click to register online)

The city and people of Atlanta were integral in the build-up to the Civil War; pivotal in the months of William Sherman’s campaign; and central in the nation’s struggles to define the lessons and legacies of the War. The three classes of “Atlanta and America’s Civil War” will touch on each of these periods–1860-61, 1864 and postwar into the 20th century–by studying and discussing the recorded words, individual and military actions, politics and geography of the time. Through pertinent music, visual art and poetry, the course also will explore the hold the War continues to have on our imaginations.

Students will use the pottery wheel to create forms of functional, visual, and technical value. Students will learn about all facets of pottery, including clay and glaze mixtures and the firing of pottery. The bowl and cup, two examples of pottery used in everyday life, are the first projects.

In conjunction with the High Museum's blockbuster exhibition of works on loan from the Museum of Modern Art, Lovett AP Art History teacher Jordan Clark will speak three evenings on selected works from this show. He will discuss not only the backgrounds of these works–their sources, context, and inspiration–but also share the observations of his 18 AP students following their viewing of the works.

Abraham Lincoln was an accomplished politician and inspirational leader, but he was also a man of great ideas. This course will examine Lincoln’s skills as a politician and his role as a creative thinker about politics, government and issues of fairness, justice, and prudence.
