Breakthrough Atlanta is a six-week, tuition-free, academic and leadership development program that matches high school and college-aged volunteers and aspiring teachers with underserved middle school students from Atlanta’s public schools. The program teaches college preparatory and personal skills that increase these student’s chances of college admission. At the same time, the program inspires and nurtures a future generation of young teachers.

Statistics show the success of the program. Breakthrough Atlanta’s first class of rising seventh graders, who entered the program in 1996, graduated from high school in the spring of 2002. Of the original 40 students, 34 went to college and one joined the military. Ninety percent of these students were the first in their family to attend college. Breakthrough Atlanta has engaged hundreds of students in the metropolitan Atlanta area, 86 percent of whom have continued to attend colleges and universities throughout the country.
