Everything You Need to Know

Q

How do the children get to their enrichment classes?

A

Teachers are given a list of students who are signed up for afternoon enrichment activities. On the day that a child attends a class, he/she reports to the After School Activities Program (ASAP) instead of carpool. After receiving a snack, all children are escorted to and from their Afternoon Enrichment classes by an ASAP staff member or the afternoon enrichment coordinator. Children remain with an adult staff member until they are picked up at carpool. Special arrangements can be made to coordinate individual escorts for children coming to an Afternoon Enrichment from an applied lesson or tutorial. There is no fee for this service.

Q

Where do kindergarten children go between dismissal and Afternoon Enrichment classes that begin at 3:15 pm?

A

Kindergarten children participating in an Afternoon Enrichment class that begins at 3:15 pm are permitted to stay in the After School Activities Program (ASAP) from dismissal at 2:00 pm until class begins. At 3:15 pm, all Afternoon Enrichment participants will be escorted to their appropriate enrichment. This service is provided at no charge.

Q

Karate Kids – Frequently Asked Questions

A

What is Karate Kids? – Karate Kids at Lovett is a traditional Okinawan karate program. Through a series of stretches, plyometric drills and exercises, children will improve balance, coordination, self discipline and motor skills.

What should I bring? – All children should have a karate uniform, called a Gi. Please bring slip-on shoes like flip flops or Crocs to wear after class and always pack a good attitude and a willingness to learn!

Is any equipment needed? – Once a child has earned his or her orange belt, sparring equipment and a mouthpiece will be required. The mouthpiece can be purchased at any sporting goods store, and the sparring equipment can be rented or purchased through Lovett or an outside vendor. Children also should have a bag to carry their sparring equipment.

What about car pool? – Following class, children will be escorted to the Lower School for pick up. Car pool will begin 15 minutes after the conclusion of the class (Karate Kids for Beginners – 4:30 pm on Tuesday; Karate Kids for Kindergarten – 3:30 pm on Thursday; Karate Kids – 4:30 pm on Thursday).

Will I be able to earn belts? – Yes! As children master various skills, they will advance through the ranks by doing a belt examination. Belt examinations involve performing certain exercises or tests to show proficiency.

Q

Swim Lessons – Frequently Asked Questions

A

How many days should my child participate? – As few or as many as you’d like! Lessons are offered Monday – Thursday at 3:15 pm, 4:00 pm, and 4:45pm . You can register for as many day and time combinations as you would like. Choose one day per week for gradual advancement or two, three or four days per week to master skills and increase cardiovascular endurance.

My child is 3 ½ - Can he participate? – No. A child must be four years old or older to participate in swim lessons at Lovett.

What if I have to miss a class? – Missed classes can be made up. Email Kate Hart at khart@lovett.org and Christian Young at cyoung@lovett.org at least one day before the class you would like to take as a make-up class. We will ensure that we have enough instructors to accommodate the additional children.

Can non-Lovett students take swim lessons? – Absolutely! Like all of our Afternoon Enrichment activities, swim lessons are open to both Lovett and non-Lovett students.

How does carpool pick up work? – For students in grades K-5, a staff member of ASAP will escort the group to the Lower School for pick up after the 3:15 pm and 4:00 pm classes. Please note that it will take about 15 minutes for the children to change clothes and walk back, so please plan to pick up around 4:15 pm and 5:00 pm. Many parents prefer to observe the classes and pick up their child at the natatorium. Pick up for the 4:45 pm class will be in the natatorium. To avoid Upper School carpool, please park in the parking deck on the back side of campus.
