Emergency communications
Severe weather, utility problems, health, or other emergencies may at some time necessitate the closing
of the school or of taking other precautionary measures. When such situations can be foreseen, an
announcement will be made as early as possible on local TV and radio stations. For weather closings,
the decision will be made by 6:00 a.m. if possible. The announcement will be broadcast over radio
stations WGST-AM (640), WSB-AM (750), WQXI-AM (790), Z.93-FM (92.9) and television stations WSB (channel 2),
WAGA (channel 5), and WXIA (channel 11). The school closing message on the school switchboard will be
updated whenever new information is available (provided a power failure has not disabled Lovett's phone
system). When emergency conditions cause the closing of the school during the school day, the school will
immediately notify the radio and television stations listed above. Students who must wait for rides for
more than 45 minutes will report to the Hendrix Theater lobby. Students who happen to get rides with Lovett
parents other than their own should leave this message with the faculty in charge of the security station.
If weather conditions outside the immediate school area are threatening, parents from those areas may call
in and pick up their children early.
Should emergency conditions arise during the school day, in addition to announcements on local radio and
TV stations, parents should access the Lovett website for the most accurate and current information. A
recording on the Lovett switchboard will carry the same message as the Lovett website. Individual phone
conversations with the school administrators are discouraged in order to keep the switchboard accessible.
Information on both the website and switchboard will be updated regularly.
In some instances parents also may receive urgent or emergency information through
the new automated contact system, Alert Now. This system allows
the school to send an electronic notification to the phone numbers
and e-mail addresses provided on the family information form. In
addition to this, e-mail messages will also be sent to those
parents who have signed up on the Lovett website to receive e-mail
communications from the school. If necessary, the school's parent
and faculty and staff telephone trees will be activated to
disseminate information as rapidly as possible.
In summary, parents should refer to the following sources for
receiving school-related emergency or urgent information:
- Local TV or radio stations
- The Lovett website at http://www.lovett.org
- The Lovett switchboard for a recorded message (404) 262-3032
- Home telephones or answering machines and e-mail
In addition to emergency communication procedures, Lovett also has a manual of emergency responses for
circumstances requiring reaction. Faculty and staff review the processes regularly, and appropriate drills
are conducted periodically throughout the year. In the event of any emergency, faculty and administrators
will remain with students until safety is assured.
