Upper School Student Activities, 2007-08
All Lovett students are encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities, which may involve producing
student publications, creating music, planning special events, competing in a sport, or performing community
service. Student organizations comprise a vital part of the total education program in the Upper School.
These organizations provide a needed opportunity for students to show leadership, responsibility, and initiative
in a setting designed to encourage independence and mature judgment. Each organization has a faculty advisor who
is responsible for working with the students to encourage proper growth in these important areas of development.
In addition, opportunities are offered in Athletics, in which
almost 70 sports teams are fielded each year, and the Fine Arts, in which students can audition
for one of the several select choirs or ensembles.
Academic
Team
The Academic Team competes against high schools throughout the
Southeastern
United States. There are three levels of competition: Varsity (Grades 9-12),
Junior Varsity (Grades 8-10), and Middle School (Grades 6-8). The team
also competes in WSB-TV's High Q program. Competition involves
everything one knows, from trivial pursuits to academic jeopardy.

literature, food, art and cultural traditions of
Asia
-- 60% of
the world's population. This year we plan on learning Chinese

seventh and eighth graders from Atlanta Public Schools are tutored by
high school and college students. Volunteers choose to help publish
the Breakthrough newsletter, work with community outreach, tutor or
mentor, assist with office work, design a web page, or work with the
art committee. The Breakthrough mission is to help bright public
middle school students with academic skills, and to provide experience
for high school students and college undergrads interested in teaching
and changing the lives of
Atlanta
's youth.
Please note that to be in this club you must fill out an application.

CAP
(Confronting Atlanta's Poverty)
This service project meets with the dual purpose of becoming more
aware of the causes and effects of poverty in
Atlanta
as well as of addressing the immediate needs of homeless men and
women for food and other necessities. CAP is completely dependent upon
donations of food, hygiene items, and clothing from advisory groups
and other members of the Lovett community. Each Friday from
3:15-4:30
after school, anyone who wishes to come to Room 224 in the
Upper
School
(Ms. Switzer's Room) may help prepare bagged peanut butter and jelly
sandwiches. Each Saturday morning from
8:30-10:00
Ms. Switzer takes those who wish to go downtown to distribute food,
hygiene items, blankets, and clothing to homeless men and women and
local parks and vacant lots in
Atlanta. Once a student has submitted a permission form, they may go
anytime during the year. Recognizing that students' lives are
increasingly overscheduled, participation with CAP can be as intense
as fits a student's schedule: it
may mean providing food or other items, making sandwiches
occasionally, going on Saturday mornings, or all of the above as fits
a students' abilities to serve. This service project was founded by
Lovett student, Jen Runge in 1998 and has been student lead since
then. It is one of the most successful service projects at Lovett.
Faculty Advisor: Ms. Switzer, sswitzer@lovett.org

No experience is necessary to join this club.

Young
Republicans Club
Young
Democrats Club
Young
Libertarians Club
This is a political club at The Lovett School which will convene
regularly to discuss politics, host debates, and invite guest
