Lower School student activities
Class unity, service, and enjoyment are the guiding principles of Lower School student activities. Throughout
the year, each grade is involved in supporting a community organization.
ASAP
The After School Activities Program (ASAP) at Lovett provides a comfortable,
secure, and relaxed environment where children's individual
differences are respected. Activities such as art, cooking, sports,
and homework time allow for individual and group participation.
Children are encouraged to participate by making their own choices,
enabling them to develop self-control and a clear understanding of the
environment.
The
program is flexible, but has an established routine that allows for a
variety of challenging, age-appropriate activities. ASAP strives to
create a team spirit among the children, enhancing individuality,
showing respect for themselves and others, respecting materials and
equipment, building positive self-confidence, and stimulating
creativity in a safe environment.
Student Service Council
The Lower School Student Service Council (SSC) includes students in Grades 3-5. Participation is voluntary.
SSC members meet occasionally during the year to plan and carry out service projects in the Atlanta community.
In addition to aluminum can drives and other projects, the SSC works in collaboration with the Upper School
group Confronting Atlanta's Poverty (CAP) to support their year-long sack lunch project.
There are approximately 120 SSC members.
Past SSC activities have included:
- Collection of warm clothes, blankets, and hygiene kits (items generally not available in shelters,
such as shampoo, soap, lotion, deodorant, toothbrushes and toothpaste, and lip balm) to distribute to
people who are homeless
- Collection of old blankets and towels for the Atlanta Humane Society
- Aluminum can drives, with proceeds going to Canine Assistants, the Multiple Sclerosis
Society, and the American Red Cross.
Pride
Pride is a volunteer organization of fifth graders whose sole responsibility is the
meeting and greeting of parents and students during morning carpool. The students are divided
into groups of five, and serve for one week at a time several times throughout the year.
Intramurals
Four sessions of Intramurals are offered during the school year, and involve students primarily in
Grades 3-5. Lovett teachers and staff lead different activities, which might include kickball,
outdoor games, photography, art, science activities, and board games. There is no charge for
these activities, which vary with each session.
Third Grade Fun Night
Third Grade Fun night takes place in early November. Third graders go to Sparkles for a roller
skating party and then come to Lovett for swimming and a pizza party.
