When Bill Barker, Lovett Class of 1971, was selected by Vince Dooley to start the University of Georgia’s women’s soccer program, he looked no further than his alma mater’s riverbank for the program’s first recruit.

A 14-year student at Lovett, Brent Abernathy remains one of Lovett’s proudest points in a rich athletic heritage. Beginning varsity baseball as a freshman, Abernathy started a career record 136 games. He was second baseman on both the 1993 and 1994 AA State Championship squads. He holds Lions’ career records for at-bats, hits, runs, doubles, batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, and total bases.

A leader by example, Clayton Smith was a three-sport athlete by the riverbank for the Lions and captain of the 2000 Lovett football team, which posted an 11-2 record and played to a berth in the AAA state quarterfinals.

“Erin Beacham was a player-coach for us as team captain her senior season at Lovett,” recalls former Lovett Athletic Director John East, then the varsity girls basketball coach. “Her on-the-floor leadership was evident then, and that intangible was a big key to our success.”

One of two junior captains on Lovett’s 2001 AAA state championship soccer squad, which had no seniors, Heather Rogers helped lead the Lions to a 20-2 record, the school’s best season ever.

An outstanding two-sport performer in football and track and field at both The Lovett School and Dartmouth College, Adam Nelson has always stepped up to life’s challenges. Having his football career in college ended by injury, Nelson concentrated on his throwing and became the 1997 NCAA Shot Put Champion.
