Lovett's Upper School, Grades 9-12, immerses students in a broad liberal arts curriculum, with each course contributing to an integrated preparation for college. Along with strong academic, artistic, and co-curricular offerings, the Upper School strives to promote leadership, service, and a sense of ownership and responsibility for the school and to prepare students for citizenship in the larger community. “We facilitate their voyages of self-discovery,” says Upper School Principal Bill Dunkel, “and teach them to appreciate the traditions that will guide them on their way.”

Highlights of the Upper School curriculum include American Studies, a required course for every junior, which is an interdisciplinary class through which students synthesize American history, literature, art, and music. In 2004, Lovett introduced Mandarin Chinese into the curriculum; Chinese is now available through the Advanced Placement level. Science Methods is a lab-intensive, problem-based course that introduces students to techniques employed by research scientists in the fields of chemistry and biotechnology. Honors Organic and Biochemistry is an upper level chemistry elective for students interested in engineering, medicine, or science.
A partnership between Atlanta’s state-of-the-art Georgia Aquarium—one of the largest in the world—and Lovett allows Marine Biology students the opportunity to work at the aquarium as interns, volunteers, and camp counselors.
Consistent with Lovett’s goal of developing a culture of integrity, the community has established an honor code, which states that a Lovett student will not lie, cheat, steal, or plagiarize. Ten Upper School students, selected by their peers and guided by faculty advisors, hear infractions of the code and recommend consequences. The Honor Code establishes a set of values and responsibilities and gives students the opportunity to monitor and maintain their own community.
