Upper School Computing

Students in the Upper School have many opportunities to engage in dynamic, rich learning through the use of technology. In addition to developing essential literacies and a culture of life-long learning, our goal is to cultivate the unique talents, interests, and leadership qualities of our students, and to give them paths to thrive. The programs below describe in brief our multifaceted approach to educational technology in the Upper School.

  • Technology Integration and 21st Century Learning: Our teachers continue to find exciting new ways to enhance their existing curriculum with student-driven, media-rich, collaborative projects.
  • Digital Arts: A variety of elective courses focus on in-depth exploration of digital media and emerging production tools. Students may concentrate on digital photography, electronic music, video production, Web 2.0 communications, and more, or take one course with smaller bites of all of those topics. All of these courses support Lovett's commitment to media literacy, and allow even deeper exposure to evolving issues of copyright and published digital media.
  • Computer Science: Building on a basic foundation of computer fluency, which we believe every student should possess, our computer science curriculum of elective courses in the Upper School offers concentrated study in programming, modeling, and interface design. From a broad introductory course to the Advance Placement Computer Science course, students at any level will develop a deeper understanding of computer science, along with an appreciation for the logic and creativity required in any scientific field.
  • Special Projects: Robotics is explored and incorporated into Lovett's science curriculum in each of the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools. In the Upper School, a discrete interdisciplinary course offers students the opportunity to build more advanced mobile robots, combining the skills and concepts of programming, physics, mechanics, and more.
  • Student Leadership: Lovett offers a variety of ways for students to assume leadership roles in technology planning and programming. The Student Technology Leadership Team is involved in creating and realizing the school's strategic vision for technology, participates in educational programs, and helps in the development of policies. New members are recruited every fall. With the coming of our physical help desk in the spring of 2010, students will play an essential role in  the school's maintenance and support system. Other work and internship opportunities are periodically presented to students, as well.
